Jill Brown
Second Flute
What are your most important educational and musical moments?
I very much enjoyed soloing with WMS several years ago, playing Hamilton Harty’s In Ireland, and I was honored that it was televised on PBS.
Why did you choose music?
I have enjoyed music since I was very young. I love that it involves challenges that are intellectual, physical, emotional, and social – all in one.
Why did you choose your instrument?
I chose piccolo because I wanted to be able to someday play Stars and Stripes Forever. To play piccolo I had to learn flute first. I was disappointed at the time, but I ended up preferring flute.
What are you currently doing?
I play principal flute in West Michigan Symphony, play in many Grand Rapids Civic Theatre shows, and teach private lessons.
Tell us about your family.
I have 4 adult children and 15 grandchildren (12 of them ages 5 and under).
Any non-musical interests or hobbies?
I enjoy nature: sitting in the woods in the evening, hiking, tenting.
