Karen Cook (2019)
Vocalist
What are your most important educational and musical moments?
My experience with the British VOCES8 US Scholars program stands out. In 2019, I was one of eight singers chosen to study and sing alongside VOCES8 in a world-wide tour. Singing in the Oregon Bach Festival is also a highlight.
Why did you choose music and your instrument?
I always loved to sing in school and church choirs while I was growing up and began my career path as an undergrad in music education. It wasn’t until recently that I realized I could have a full career as a professional singer and went on to get a Master of Music in Voice Performance. I am excited about the wonderful opportunities I have to sing professionally.
What are you currently doing?
I am singing in several choirs around the country including The Toledo Opera, The Union, 21V, The Mirai Collective, Audivi, Sounding Light, and many others. I’m especially excited to have been selected for the Spoleto Festival USA Chorus. It’s a month-long residency in Charleston, SC performing an opera and major choral works.
Tell us about your family.
My husband, Matt, and I have been married for 15 years. We have a family of eight pets including two dogs, five laying hens, and one hedgehog!
Any non-musical interests or hobbies?
I love rock climbing and downhill skiing and also spend time in an indoor gym.
