Leslie Deppe (2009)
Principal Flute
What are your most important educational and musical moments?
Giving an annual recital since college, usually in Grand Rapids. Those contain some of my most memorable moments and it keeps my music performance level sharp. Also, I take monthly lessons which keep me motivated. I believe in being a lifelong learner.
Tell us about your family.
My two boys are my joy and heart! My husband Todd owns his own plumbing business and is super supportive. Our son Colin is a runner. He is almost 19 and has been coming to the island since he was 3. He prefers Beaver Island more than any other vacation spot.
Why did you choose music?
I knew it was what I wanted to do immediately (when you know, you know!).
Why did you choose your instrument?
No instrument stood out to me in 6th grade – I liked MTV and heavy metal – but my parents wanted me to try one for a year. I picked the flute from a piece of paper because it looked silver and shiny. I found it hard and I had a difficult time for first few weeks.
What else are you currently doing?
In addition to Baroque on Beaver, I am a full-time member of the Battle Creek and West Michigan symphonies. I have also worked at Meyer Music (my clients are schools) for many years.
Any non-musical interests or hobbies?
I am learning bagpipes! I play with a bagpipe band. I love to read, watch movies, do jigsaw puzzles, and volunteer with animals at the Humane Society.
