Tim Mocny (2011)
Percussion, Principal
What are your most important educational and musical moments? The first post-pandemic Baroque on Beaver concert we played in 2021 tickled me no end. I got to play in person again with real people playing real music together…. I smiled my way through the whole concert!
Also, teaching is so uplifting for me, and I feel blessed that I get to do work that brings so much to my life.
Why did you choose music?
I started playing piano at a young age and my love of music in general naturally developed as I saw many inspiring performances.
Why did you choose your instrument?
My Mom talked me into joining the school band. I started with the trumpet and played that for only a couple of months when my sixth grade band director, Matt Taton, talked me into playing the drums. I never looked back.
What are you currently doing?
I am manager of lesson programs and teach privately at B’s music shop in Mt. Pleasant. I am a member of the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra and the Saginaw Bay Symphony. When my schedule permits, I am a sub for the Traverse Bay, Midland, Lansing, and Flint Symphonies. One of my really fun gigs is coaching and writing music for the Central MI marching band drum line.
Tell us about your family.
My wife Christine and I have three daughters, one son, and two dogs…a very busy household!
Any non-musical interests or hobbies?
I recently started doing computer software programming, and I also enjoy board games, card games, video games, running, swimming, and paddling my canoe down the river.
